Thai Startup Sensation “Mad Unicorn” Dominates Netflix, Ignites Social Media frenzy

The recently launched Thai drama “Mad Unicorn,” which chronicles the real-life tale of Thailand’s pioneering unicorn startup, has sparked considerable online discussion. It quickly climbed to become one of the most searched titles on Google and secured the top spot as a trending show on Netflix Thailand after premiering last Thursday.

Created by Thailand’s premier film production company GDH 559, “Mad Unicorn” consists of seven episodes. The story follows Santi Saelee, an ambitious individual hailing from northern regions who overcomes modest origins to break free from his past as a street dweller. After founding a courier service called Thunder Express, he encounters numerous chances for growth along with formidable adversaries.

“Battle like underdogs; soar as unicorns,” states the series’ tagline.

The series drew inspiration from the true story of Komsan Lee, who founded Thailand’s inaugural unicorn startup, Flash Express. Additionally, he was honored as the Bangkok Post CEO of 2021.

Following its debut on the streaming service last Thursday, the show rapidly climbed to become Thailand’s top-watched series, igniting conversations across social media platforms. Media organizations delved into numerous behind-the-scenes narratives surrounding it.

Most comments from netizens, using hashtags #MadUnicorn and #????????????? on X, formerly Twitter, described the series as fierce and intense, keeping viewers glued to watch all episodes in one sitting.

The actor receiving the most attention was Natara “Ice” Nopparatayaporn, who played the role of Santi.

Since the character of Santi is portrayed as a Thai businessman who speaks fluent Chinese, Ice acquired the language within only two months. As stated in an interview at the show’s debut event, he delivered a two-page monologue in Chinese with a convincing accent and genuine acting skills.

The series was helmed by Nottapon “Kai” Boonprakob, renowned for directing One for the Road (2021), Come and See (2019), as well as a documentary about Thai rocker Artiwara “Toon Bodyslam” Kongmalai’s charitable marathon event numbered at 2,215 (2018).

The production of Mad Unicorn lasted for almost four years, according to the director.

The show can now be streamed on Netflix, featuring an English audio track along with subtitles provided in numerous other languages.
