A cyclo driver in Nha Trang tourist city in central Vietnam has been expelled from the local tourist cyclo union after a video showed him snatching payment from a Russian tourist who gave him less than what they had agreed upon.
The incident occurred on May 31, when the driver picked up two Russian tourists for a ride from Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street to Tran Phu Street. The fare was agreed at VND50,000 (US$1.92).
“When we arrived, the customers only gave VND35,000, so I did not agree. After a few words, I had to accept this amount, but because I was angry, I behaved in an uncivilized manner towards the customers,” he said, offering an apology.
The video, widely shared online, shows a foreign woman handing cash to the driver while holding a child. A dispute over the fare follows, during which the visibly agitated driver snatches the money from her hand.
The footage has sparked public outrage, with many criticizing the driver’s behavior as unprofessional and damaging to Nha Trang’s image as a welcoming tourist destination.
