ARDOT Cuts Speed Limit to Slash Highway Crashes

POCAHONTAS, Ark. (KAIT) – A speed limit reduction aims to reduce accidents on Highway 67 through Pocahontas.

Arkansas Department of Transportation Engineer Shelby Richey said they have dropped the speed limit from 45 miles per hour to 40 on U.S. Highway 67 between Highways 304 and 90.

Mayor Keith Futrell said this is a change they have wanted for a long time, especially with the many 18-wheelers that come through the area.

“You know, 5 or 10 miles per hour on 80,000 pounds being able to stop is worth a lot, especially in an area where we have had several accidents,” said Futrell.

Futrell said that the change should not cause any major delays in time to get through the area.

“It’s only about a two-and-a-half- to three-mile stretch. It’s not miles and miles,” said Futrell. “It knocks a little of your time down, but we are trying to do it for the safety of the people on Highway 67.”

Futrell added that one day, they could even lower the speed limit to 35 miles per hour to lower crashes as much as possible.
