A Maya city ruins dating back almost 3,000 years have been discovered in the north region.

Once was situated approximately 21 kilometers (14 miles) away from the archaeological site of Uaxactun in Guatemala’s northern Petén region.
The structure traces its origins back to the “Middle Preclassic” era, around 800 to 500 BCE, making it one of the earliest and most important religious hubs within the Mayan civilization. This site is situated in the rainforest area of Petén close to Mexico’s frontier, as reported by Guatemala’s cultural department.
How did the city acquire its name? Archaeologists discovered two anthropomorphic statues at the location, dating them to between 500 and 300 BCE. According to experts, these “primordial pair” might be associated with early rituals related to ancestral veneration, as stated by the ministry.
Los Abuelos spans across an expanse of 16 square kilometers (six square miles). Additionally, they found a pyramid towering at 33 meters (108 feet), along with what was described as a “distinctive canal network.” These structures feature murals dating back to the Preclassic era.
The site showcases impressive architectural design, featuring pyramids and monuments adorned with distinctive regional symbols, according to the ministry.
Last year, an extensive network of historically linked cities was uncovered in the secluded El Mirador rainforest area within Guatemala. Over 400 settlement sites were identified, many of which trace their origins back to around 1,000 BC. These findings reveal
linked by roads
as well, leading to their description as “the first freeway system globally”.
Findings such as these have greatly expanded our comprehension of the Mayan civilization.
