Following Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s instruction to tackle environmental contamination, there has been a notable rise in the establishment of emission-testing stations, leading to considerable lines of vehicles at multiple sites. The expansion was overseen by Senior Minister and Environment Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, as part of efforts led by the Punjab Environmental Protection Department (EPD). According to Director General of the Punjab Environment Department, Imran Hamid Sheikh, the count of these test centers surged from eight to sixty. This increase aims to manage the escalating vehicle population and decrease waiting periods.
The key sites for the newly established Emission Testing Booths encompass Gajjumata, Saggian Toll Plaza, Central Park, Bedian Road, Valencia Town, Race Course Park, Marghzar Colony, Minar-e-Pakistan (Yadgar-e-Pakistan), Allama Iqbal Town, Shahdara Colony, Paragon City, Manawan Training Center, Gymkhana Club, LDA Avenue, Bahria Town, and DHA Raya.
Moreover, inspection stations have been established at major academic institutions such as Punjab University, LUMS, Lahore School of Economics, Aitchison College, Government College University (FC College), and Allama Iqbal Medical College. These centers function between 9 AM and 5 PM daily, issuing ‘Green Stickers’ to cars compliant with emissions regulations. Additionally, three portable emission test units are being utilized across different governmental offices for increased accessibility. According to Raja Jahangir Anwar, the Secretary Environment Punjab, July 1 marks the last day for car owners to ensure their vehicles pass the emissions tests and receive these green stickers. He mentioned that this extension of service points came about due to high demand from citizens along with increasing summertime heat conditions.
