A young motorist has been arrested just 17 days after obtaining their full driving license following an incident on the M50 motorway. The driver, who was operating an Audi A3, was caught speeding at a rate of 35km/h over the speed limit during the evening of Wednesday.
The Garda Road Policing Unit was conducting routine patrols when they noticed the vehicle traveling at an excessive speed. The motorist was pulled over and subjected to a roadside drugs test, which revealed positive results for both cocaine and cannabis. As a result, the driver was taken into custody at the scene and is now set to appear in court.
According to a statement released by An Garda Siochana, the driver had only held their full license for 17 days when the incident occurred. Additionally, the maximum penalty for all drug driving offenses includes a fine of up to €5,000 and a potential sentence of up to six months in prison if convicted on summary conviction.
