YMCA Collects School Supplies for Local Nonprofit

Community Effort to Support Educators and Students

YMCA Buffalo Niagara is taking a proactive step to support local educators and students as they prepare for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. The organization has launched a donation drive aimed at collecting essential back-to-school supplies for teachers and children. These donations will be directed to The Teacher’s Desk, a local non-profit that provides free classroom supplies to teachers in the Western New York area.

The initiative is designed to help ease the financial burden on educators who often spend their own money on classroom materials. By gathering supplies through this drive, the YMCA hopes to ensure that all students have access to the resources they need to succeed in the new academic year.

What Can Be Donated?

The YMCA is seeking specific items that are commonly used in classrooms. These include:

  • Pencils, crayons, and markers
  • Highlighters
  • Folders
  • Copy paper
  • Tissues
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks

Donations can be dropped off at any of the YMCA’s five wellness centers starting Wednesday, July 23. The drive will continue until July 31, giving residents ample time to contribute.

A Partnership That Makes a Difference

The collaboration between the YMCA and The Teacher’s Desk has already made a significant impact. According to Jessica Woodward, the Associate Director of The Teacher’s Desk, the partnership has enabled the organization to serve over 150,000 students and 6,000 teachers across Western New York.

“We are deeply grateful for the continued support of the YMCA and their generous donors,” Woodward said. “Thanks to their partnership, we’re able to serve over 150,000 students and 6,000 teachers across Western New York.”

This kind of community effort highlights the importance of collective action in supporting education. By providing free supplies, The Teacher’s Desk helps teachers focus more on teaching and less on the cost of materials.

Encouraging Participation

To encourage more people to get involved, the YMCA is offering an added incentive. Anyone who wishes to participate in the donation drive but is not currently a YMCA member will be eligible to save $50 on a membership. This offer is a great way for individuals to support the cause while also gaining access to the YMCA’s wellness programs.

John Ehrbar, President and CEO of YMCA Buffalo Niagara, emphasized the importance of the partnership in a press release. “Supporting teachers and students with the supplies they need is one way we can help, and we’re proud to partner with The Teacher’s Desk to make a difference in classrooms across Western New York.”
