xAI starts building computing system at ‘Colossus 2’

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (WMC) – xAI has started setting up computing equipment at its newly expanded data center in Southwest Memphis.

The new facility on Tulane Road,named “Colossus 2,” will include at least one million Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) upon its completion in 2026.

On Tuesday, xAI Memphisposted on X stating that 110,000 GPUs are being installed, which will be “supported by a variety of energy sources, much like Colossus.”

These feature Tesla Megapacks, which the company states will offer essential assistance during times of high energy usage, “maintaining a reliable electricity supply and protecting Shelby County residents from possible power outages.”

Colossus 2 is anticipated to be operational in the coming weeks.

The Greater Memphis Chamber stated in May that there wereno intention to install gas turbinesat this site.
