WVU Hosts K-12 Educators for Finance Conference

A Week of Financial Education for Educators

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The start of a weeklong financial literacy conference for K-12 teachers across West Virginia took place on Monday, hosted by the John Chambers College of Business & Economics at West Virginia University. This event, known as the 23rd annual “Finance University,” is aimed at empowering educators to teach personal finance with confidence and expertise.

The conference brings together teachers and professors from all corners of the state, offering them valuable resources and knowledge to incorporate into their classrooms. The goal is to ensure that students are well-prepared for the financial challenges they may face in adulthood.

Joshua Hall, Dean of the Chambers College, emphasized the importance of this initiative. He stated that the conference supports an ongoing mission to equip the next generation with essential financial skills. “This year’s turnout has been the highest it’s ever been. There’s a great demand by teachers in the state for more continuing education, especially around financial literacy. We see quite a number of outcomes. One of them is students get better financial literacy. They have the savings and wherewithal to be more successful in their adult life,” Hall said.

A Focus on Lifelong Success

This year’s theme, “Teaching Personal Finance for Lifelong Success,” highlights the importance of financial education in shaping the future of students. The event was made possible through the support of the Truist West Virginia Foundation and the Equitable Foundation, which provided crucial funding and sponsorship.

Jarian Kerekes, President at the Equitable Foundation, shared his personal connection to the cause. Growing up without much financial knowledge, he expressed his passion for supporting teachers in educating the next generation. “It’s a no brainer for Equitable to be involved,” Kerekes said, reflecting on the foundation’s commitment to financial literacy.

Activities and Topics Covered

The first evening of the conference featured a tour of the West Virginia University Football facility, giving attendees a unique experience and a chance to network. The evening concluded with dinner at the Diversified Energy Terrace at Milan Puskar Stadium, providing a relaxed setting for discussions and camaraderie.

Throughout the week, participants will engage with a variety of topics designed to enhance their teaching methods. These include the integration of artificial intelligence in financial education, understanding taxes, and planning for retirement. Each session is crafted to provide practical insights that educators can apply in their classrooms.

The Importance of Financial Literacy

Financial literacy is a critical skill that can significantly impact an individual’s life trajectory. By equipping students with the knowledge to manage money effectively, educators play a vital role in shaping a financially responsible society. The conference not only provides professional development opportunities for teachers but also emphasizes the broader societal benefits of financial education.

As the week progresses, the focus remains on fostering a deeper understanding of personal finance. The ultimate goal is to create a ripple effect, where students carry these lessons into their adult lives, making informed decisions and achieving long-term success.

Conclusion

The Finance University conference exemplifies the collaborative efforts between educational institutions, foundations, and community organizations to promote financial literacy. With a strong emphasis on lifelong learning and practical application, the event continues to make a meaningful impact on educators and students alike. As the conference wraps up on Thursday evening, the knowledge gained will serve as a foundation for future generations, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of personal finance.
