Writer accuses team of altering ‘Behroopia’ script

A Public Rebuttal: Screenwriter Rida Bilal Denounces Creative Alterations in Behroopia

Screenwriter Rida Bilal has taken a bold step by publicly distancing herself from the ongoing TV series Behroopia, asserting that the current version of the show no longer aligns with her original vision. In a powerful Instagram post released on Friday, she expressed her frustration over the significant changes made to her script without her consent.

“I have always believed in standing up for what is right,” she wrote. “When your name is attached to something that no longer reflects your voice, it’s time to speak up. Scenes were changed, characters were twisted, and intentions were lost. The writing you see now? It’s not mine.”

Behroopia, starring Faysal Quraishi and Madiha Imam, follows the story of Mahnoor, a woman who enters a second marriage only to uncover a dark secret about her new husband. The series, framed as a psychological thriller, delves into themes of deception, betrayal, and the societal taboos surrounding divorce and remarriage. However, Rida feels that these themes have been compromised in the final production.

In her post, Rida shared her disappointment, stating, “I have tried to express my concerns in a dignified manner before, but everyone has their breaking point, and I have finally reached mine. Behroopia no longer reflects my ideas, my writing, or the emotions I intended to convey to the audience.”

She also took a pointed jab at the network and director, writing, “It, however, does reflect the channel’s lack of ownership, the director’s unfulfilled desires, and his tendency to write in ways that could potentially harm the industry further.”

This issue of creative interference is not unique to Rida. Other writers in the Pakistani television industry have faced similar challenges. For instance, Bee Gul, known for her 2014 series Zid, which explored a woman’s resistance against forced marriage and societal pressure, has spoken about how producer interference undermined the show’s potential. She claimed that such pressures led to the series’ critical failure.

Rida’s public statement has sparked a wave of support from both industry professionals and viewers. Many have praised her for speaking out and highlighting the importance of respecting a writer’s original vision. As of Saturday, neither the private channel nor the director of Behroopia has issued a public response to her allegations.

Rida is well-known for her contributions to popular dramas such as Khudgarz and Do Bol. Her work is often celebrated for its character-driven narratives and emotionally resonant storytelling. Her recent decision to speak out has added another layer to her legacy, emphasizing her commitment to artistic integrity.

The situation raises important questions about the balance between creative control and external influence in the entertainment industry. As more artists begin to voice their concerns, there is a growing call for greater transparency and respect for the original vision behind any production.
