Wonder Woman Snags Supergirl’s Writer for a Rebooted DC Epic

With James Gunn’s “Superman” leading at the box office, everyone is watching to see what the updated DCU has in store. Now, DC Studios has brought on playwright, actress, and “Supergirl” writer Ana Nogueira to create the new version of “Wonder Woman,”The Wrap reports.

The latest update reveals that “Superman” has surpassed $409 million worldwide in just two weekends, marking a major success for comic book films, similar to the box office achievements seen before the pandemic.

Nogueira, who has previously appeared in “The Michael J. Fox Show,” “The Vampire Diaries,” and “Hightown,” is rapidly emerging as one of DC’s preferred collaborators. She is also said to be working on a live-action version of Teen Titans for the Warner Bros. label overseen by Gunn and Peter Safran. “Supergirl,” set to premiere in theaters on June 26, 2026, will mark her first completed screenplay, based on the graphic novel “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.”

The role of Wonder Woman in the new DC Universe

Reviving Wonder Woman has become a major focus for the studio. Earlier this month,Varietyreported that DC is accelerating the film’s production, and Gunn statedEntertainment Weekly in Junethat a new “Wonder Woman” film is “currently in the process of being written.” DC Studios is also reportedly developing a “Paradise Island” TV series for HBO, which will take place on Wonder Woman’s homeland of Themyscira.

Gal Gadot introduced the character of the Princess of Themyscira on the big screen in 2017 through director Patty Jenkins’ film “Wonder Woman,” which generated $822 million globally and changed perceptions that movies centered around female superheroes lacked appeal compared to those featuring male leads.

Gadot and Jenkins came together again for “Wonder Woman 1984,” which was released on Christmas Day in 2020 at the peak of the pandemic. Gadot also reworked her part in “Justice League” (2017), “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (2021), and “The Flash” (2023).

It remains uncertain what position Wonder Woman will hold following Gunn and Safran’s reboot of the DC universe. Nogueira might steer the character toward an innovative path, yet this approach could carry risks, especially since the original “Wonder Woman” was one of the most cherished films from the prior franchise.

For the time being, we’ll need to wait to find out more about Wonder Woman’s upcoming appearances on the big screen. It’s possible she might make a brief appearance in “Supergirl” when it comes to theaters next year, much like how Supergirl actress Milly Alcock showed up at the end of “Superman” to hint at the next phase of the DCU.
