Wives as Co-Drivers to Reduce Road Accidents – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps has recommended that women traveling with their husbands should act as co-drivers rather than applying powder, checking mirrors, or adjusting headgear.

The FRSC’s Costain Unit Commander in Lagos State, Chief Route Commander Victor Okelola, shared the guidance during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

As per Okelola, women seated in the front, observing, warning, and guiding their husbands while driving can reduce road accidents.

It has been noted that often, wives fail to focus on their husbands’ driving behavior.

They participate in creating and securing headwear while in the vehicle.

“Additionally, in this era of mobile devices, people often focus on their phones and pay little attention to their environment,” he stated.

Okelola encouraged women to stay alert and remind their husbands when they were driving too fast or engaging in other dangerous driving behaviors.

He mentioned that operating a vehicle at speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour is risky.

Okelola urged drivers to follow traffic laws and guidelines to promote safe road conditions.

He also urged them to check that their vehicles were in good shape before starting their journey.

An official stated that violations such as overloading, reckless speeding, and driving without a license continued to be considered traffic offenses, along with other similar infractions.

He highlighted that 18 years is the minimum age needed to drive, and mentioned that 26 years is the minimum age required for commercial driving.

He mentioned that the upper age limit was 65 years.
