Sri Lanka, June 9 — Energy Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maximizing the use of renewable energy, with a special focus on wind power generation in the Mannar region.
Speaking during an inspection tour of existing and proposed wind power sites in Mannar, the Minister emphasized that the current administration is actively implementing its renewable energy agenda to address the country’s ongoing energy challenges through sustainable investments and modern technology.
As part of his visit, Minister Jayakody inspected the site allocated for the proposed Mullikulam Wind Power Plant, a 100-megawatt project currently open for tenders, as well as the Thambapani Wind Power Plant, already in operation under the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
He also reviewed plans for the upcoming Hayleys Fentons Wind Farm, which will generate 50 MW. The government has secured a power purchase agreement at a competitive rate of 4.65 US cents per unit for a segment of this facility.
In addition to site visits, the Minister held discussions with senior officials from the CEB and engaged with local stakeholders, including Rev. Fr. S. Marcus, Chairman of the Mannar Citizens’ Committee, to consider public input and ensure community alignment with the government’s development strategy.
