Why Is CM Silent? Odisha Congress Reacts to Balasore College Self-Immolation

Concerns Over Silence and Inaction in Odisha

The recent incident of a student allegedly attempting self-immolation in protest against alleged sexual harassment by a teacher has sparked widespread concern and criticism across Odisha. The situation has raised serious questions about the handling of such cases, particularly from the state government’s leadership.

Rajani Kumar Mohanty, the spokesperson for the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee, voiced his concerns over the silence from key political figures, including Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister. He highlighted the growing number of crimes against women in the state, referencing a previous statement by Rahul Gandhi that 15 women face serious crimes daily. Mohanty questioned why the Chief Minister and Deputy CM had remained silent following the incident involving a student who attempted to take her own life due to continuous harassment by a professor.

Government Response and Inquiry Measures

In response to the incident, the Higher Education Department of Odisha has taken steps to address the allegations. A committee was formed to conduct a thorough inquiry into the case involving Samira Kumar Sahu, an Assistant Professor at FM Auto College. This decision came after a female student from the college in Balasore attempted self-immolation.

The committee’s responsibilities include investigating the circumstances that led to the self-immolation, examining the professor’s involvement, and assessing the role of the college administration, principal, and Internal Complaint Committee in handling prior complaints. Additionally, the committee will identify any lapses by individuals or authorities and consider any other relevant matters that may arise during the inquiry.

The committee is empowered to seek assistance from any necessary individuals and submit its findings to the Higher Education Department. This move reflects the government’s attempt to ensure transparency and accountability in the matter.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

The Balasore Police have already taken action in the case, arresting the accused teacher involved in the self-immolation attempt. According to the Superintendent of Police, Raj Prasad, there is prima facie evidence against the teacher. The victim had lodged a complaint with the Internal Compliance Committee on June 30, and the police are currently investigating the findings of their report.

“Whoever is found guilty will be held accountable,” Prasad stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. The teacher has been arrested and forwarded to court, marking a critical step in the legal process.

Suspension of Key Officials

In addition to the police investigation, the Odisha government has also suspended the Assistant Professor and Principal of FM (Auto) College. The suspension of Dillip Kumar Ghose, the Principal, follows allegations that he failed to perform his duties properly in handling the matter. The government cited sub-rule (2) of rule 12 of the Odisha Civil Services (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules, 1962, as the basis for his suspension.

This decision underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the issue and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. However, it also highlights the need for more robust mechanisms to prevent such incidents in the future.

Ongoing Challenges and Calls for Reform

Despite these measures, the incident has reignited discussions about the broader challenges faced by women in Odisha, particularly in educational institutions. The lack of effective support systems and the failure to address complaints promptly have been identified as critical issues.

Advocates and activists continue to call for stronger policies and better enforcement of existing laws to protect women from harassment and violence. They emphasize the importance of creating safe environments where students can come forward without fear of retaliation.

As the inquiry continues and legal proceedings unfold, the hope is that this incident will lead to meaningful reforms that prevent similar tragedies in the future. The voices of those affected must be heard, and systemic changes must be implemented to ensure justice and safety for all.
