Why I’m Grateful I Left Abuja After My NYSC — Dr. Najeem Salaam

A Journey from Orphan to Speaker and Scholar

Dr. Najeem Folasayo Salaam, a two-term former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, has shared his inspiring journey from an orphan to a prominent political figure and academic. His story is one of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education.

Early Life and Challenges

Dr. Salaam was born on August 8, 1965, in Ejigbo, Osun State. He grew up in an average Yoruba family but faced immense challenges when he lost both parents at a young age—his mother passed away when he was six, and his father died when he was ten. This early loss left him as an orphan, but he credits God for raising him to become someone significant in life.

His primary and secondary education took place in Ejigbo and Ola Town, where he developed a strong desire to become a lawyer. However, due to not studying Literature in English, he had to retake his West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Baptist High School, Ejigbo. With God’s grace, he passed the exam and continued his education.

Academic Pursuits and Professional Growth

After completing his secondary education, Dr. Salaam enrolled at the former Oyo State College of Arts and Science (OSCAS) in Ile-Ife for his Advanced Level Certificate. Although he initially aimed to study Law at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), he did not meet the cut-off marks. Instead, he pursued Political Science, which eventually became his path. He graduated with a strong Second Class (Upper Division) in 1993 and later earned a Master’s degree in Political Science from the same university in 2013. He also completed his PhD while serving as the Speaker of the House of Assembly, further solidifying his academic credentials.

Balancing Responsibilities

Combining his studies with the demands of being a Speaker and a family man required immense sacrifice and determination. Dr. Salaam emphasized that nothing good comes cheap and that courage and focus are essential. While working as a Speaker, he managed to attend classes by utilizing available resources and support from colleagues. His Deputy ensured that the work of the Assembly continued smoothly during his absence.

The Importance of Education

Dr. Salaam believes that learning is a lifelong process. He sees politics as a profession, but he also emphasizes the importance of having a “second address” outside of politics. As a political scientist and farmer, he continues to engage in diverse fields, believing that knowledge and skills beyond politics are crucial for personal and societal growth.

School Life at OAU

Dr. Salaam recalls his time at Obafemi Awolowo University as both exciting and challenging. He spent countless hours in the library, often sleeping in classrooms during exams. Despite his efforts, he only achieved a strong Second Class Upper, as it was difficult for students in Political Science to graduate with a First Class. However, he remained focused on his goals and worked diligently to achieve them.

Career After Graduation

After graduating in 1993, Dr. Salaam faced challenges in finding employment due to a national strike that delayed his graduation until 1994. He served his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abuja but found it difficult to secure a job there. Eventually, he returned to his hometown and started a small pharmacy shop, which became a turning point in his life. His kindness and generosity in helping people without money led to recognition and eventually opened doors to political involvement.

Political Journey

Dr. Salaam’s political career began after the return of civilian rule in 1999 when he joined the Alliance for Democracy. He actively participated in meetings at various levels, balancing his business and political activities. His experiences in grassroots politics shaped his leadership style and commitment to public service.

Reflections on Life and Family

At 60, Dr. Salaam reflects on life’s ups and downs, emphasizing the importance of faith, family, and community. He acknowledges the pain of losing his parents but finds comfort in the support of those who have taken on parental roles in his life. He values friendship and respects people regardless of their social status, believing that we should all be our brothers’ keepers.

Personal Challenges

One of the most traumatic experiences in Dr. Salaam’s life was the kidnapping of his first wife. Despite the danger, she was rescued after five days in the forest due to the efforts of vigilantes and divine intervention. The incident highlighted the need for improved security measures in the country.

Current Activities

Today, Dr. Salaam is involved in large-scale farming, including crop planting, poultry, fishery, and animal husbandry. He continues to contribute to his community through various endeavors, demonstrating his commitment to sustainable development and economic empowerment.
