I really like the I Know What You Did Last Summerfilms from the 1990s. They were released at the heightslasherperiod, marked by a constant presence of a killer targeting teenagers, blending mystery with horror, giving you the opportunity to explore characters, the stakes, and the environment.
Well, like many ’90s movies, we’re back with a new version. And it’s one I’m truly excited about.
Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was given the responsibility of adapting this new slasher film to the screen and she recently shared her thoughts on theFilmmaker Toolkit podcastI enjoy sharing tales that can touch on darker themes, yet still possess a sort of lighthearted, commercial appeal,” she added, “I believe every one of my films has this kind of playful nod to it.
What excites me the most about this film is the combination of the original elements with a brand-new ensemble, carrying forward the spirit of the narrative.
I wanted it to be something that felt like a twin flame to the 1997 original,” Robinson stated. “That was the starting point. What does this look like now? What does accountability mean today? What does a story about morality look like in the present?
Robinson entered Hollywood with a Hitchcockian styleDo Revenge, which was a sensational tribute toStrangers on a Train, but in this film, she was embodying Spielberg.
When questioned about the inspirations for the new film, Robinson stated, “‘Jaws was a big one.”
Films of this nature must maintain a careful equilibrium between humor and fear.
There are jokes in this film, it’s enjoyable, but I didn’t want the violence to be humorous,” Robinson stated. “As the movie progresses and our main characters start to die, I really wanted those moments to feel very intense and disturbing. However, I didn’t want there to be any obstacles for viewers. I aimed for this to be a horror film that is both frightening and entertaining, where you grab your closest friend and scream during the jump scares. It’s an R-rated movie, and I didn’t want it to come across as gentle, but I did want it to be a fun evening at the cinema.
In my opinion, that’s precisely why individuals watch these movies, and listening to the director acknowledge that increases my anticipation for this film.
