The Journey of a Young Culinary Star
“MasterChef Junior” first made its debut in 2013, capturing the attention of food enthusiasts and aspiring young chefs across the country. Contestants, typically aged between eight and 13, faced off in a series of culinary challenges judged by renowned chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Aáron Sánchez, who also serves as a judge on “Chopped.” Among the many talented participants, thirteen-year-old Alexander Weiss emerged as the first-ever winner with his impressive creation of gnocchi and veal chop. But what has he been up to over the years?
Currently, Alexander Weiss is working as a private chef in Los Angeles, California. He has also earned an Associate of Arts degree in Culinary Arts from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. In 2019, he launched his own business called Dinners by Alexander, offering personalized dining experiences directly in customers’ homes. His career has taken him to various high-profile positions, including an internship at The Barn at Blackberry Farm, a James Beard Award-winning restaurant in Tennessee that highlights Southern and Appalachian cuisine. Additionally, he has worked alongside celebrated chefs such as Dominique Ansel, the creator of the Cronut, and Andrew Carmellini at his New York City restaurant, The Dutch.
Weiss returned to the “MasterChef Junior” set in 2022, this time as a guest judge. The episode, titled “Junior Edition: Alexander in a Box,” featured him teaching the young contestants how to properly filet a salmon and then challenging them to filet as many fish as possible within a short 15-minute timeframe.
The Impact of Winning
Winning “MasterChef Junior” had a significant impact on Weiss’s life. While adult “MasterChef” winners often transition directly into their culinary careers, the junior version offered unique opportunities for young chefs. In a video posted to the “MasterChef” YouTube channel the year after his win, Weiss shared how the experience led to international travel, invitations to restaurants around the world, and recognition in New York City. He also mentioned cooking for Victoria’s Secret models and the British Consulate—achievements that were remarkable for someone so young.
The champion of “MasterChef Junior” receives a $100,000 prize. Weiss used part of the winnings to upgrade his kitchen tools but saved most of it for future endeavors, including opening his own restaurant one day.
Continued Growth and Future Aspirations
When “MasterChef Junior” checked in with Weiss again in 2018, he reflected on his journey and how the competition helped him grow as a chef. In a YouTube video, he shared that his greatest takeaway was learning to accept and apply constructive criticism effectively. He also improved his ability to manage time while cooking. Ultimately, he credits the show with laying a strong foundation for his career in the culinary world.
In a 2022 interview with the Newport Beach Independent, Weiss expressed his desire to do more judging on “MasterChef Junior.” Whether or not he returns to the television screen, his journey continues to inspire young chefs everywhere.
