Welsh Male Choir Expands to Wiltshire, Seeking New Members
Côr Meibion De Cymru, a renowned Welsh male choir, is now reaching out to men in the Wiltshire area, specifically in Wootton Bassett and surrounding regions, to join a new English-based rehearsal group. This initiative offers an opportunity for individuals to be part of a traditional Welsh choir without needing to speak Welsh or read musical notation.
Guy Edwards, the campaign manager from Wootton Bassett, shared his enthusiasm: “There’s nothing quite like standing on stage with a real Welsh choir singing an old favourite such as Men of Harlech or a powerful music theatre anthem. It’s incredibly uplifting.”
The choir was founded in 1982 with the purpose of taking part in a North American tour. Initially, it brought together singers from over 40 choirs across South Wales and England. The first tour saw more than 500 choristers participate, and the choir has continued to thrive ever since.
Although it is smaller today, Côr Meibion De Cymru still tours regularly, with recent performances in Madeira. Many members are part of other choirs and do not need to leave their current commitments to join. In the past year, the choir performed as part of a massed Welsh choir at the Royal Albert Hall. This year, it will entertain a crowd of 76,000 at the rugby autumn internationals in Cardiff by performing the national anthems.
Mr Edwards explained that the new rehearsal group will be located where there is the most interest and on evenings that suit the majority of members. Rehearsal groups meet during the week, with a full choir rehearsal held in Cwmafan every four weeks. Current English members, including those from Southampton and Wiltshire, often car-share to these Sunday sessions.
The choir is now inviting expressions of interest from men in England, particularly those with Welsh connections or a love for the Welsh choral tradition. Mr Edwards added, “They might need a bigger car if there’s lots of interest.”
Inclusive and Accessible
Côr Meibion De Cymru welcomes men of all backgrounds. No prior musical training is required, and there is no obligation to commit after expressing interest. The choir’s patron is King Charles III, and its chaplain is the Bishop of St Davids.
Looking ahead, a performance at Liverpool Cathedral is scheduled for 2026. Those interested in joining are encouraged to get in touch before the end of August.
Whether you have a connection to Wales or simply appreciate the rich traditions of Welsh choral music, this is a unique opportunity to become part of something special. The choir continues to inspire and bring people together through the power of song.
