Expanding Connectivity: The Weber Road Trail Project
The Forest Preserve District of Will County is making significant strides in enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike. With several trail projects planned for this year and beyond, the district is focusing on improving access to natural spaces and promoting active lifestyles. One of the most anticipated initiatives is the Weber Road Trail project, which aims to create a continuous path connecting multiple parks and preserves across the region.
“Our trails are one of the biggest draws for nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts,” said Cindy Wojdyla Cain, the Forest Preserve District’s public information officer. “If we build them, people come. It’s not unusual to see people running, walking, pushing strollers, rollerblading and biking along our paths as soon as they are opened.”
The Weber Road Trail project is designed to link DuPage River Park in Naperville with Indian Boundary Park in Bolingbrook. This new trail will provide a seamless connection for pedestrians, cyclists, and other trail users, offering a safe and scenic route through some of the area’s most beautiful natural landscapes.
The project also aims to integrate with an existing section of the DuPage River Greenway Trail, which is managed by the Bolingbrook Park District. This existing trail runs eastward toward the Forest Preserve’s Hidden Lakes Trout Farm and Whalon Lake preserves, while also extending northward to the DuPage Forest Preserve District’s Greene Valley Preserve. By connecting these areas, the Weber Road Trail will enhance regional connectivity and offer more options for outdoor activities.
Several local organizations are collaborating on the project, including the City of Naperville, Naperville Park District, and Bolingbrook Park District. These partnerships highlight the shared commitment to creating accessible and sustainable recreational spaces that benefit the entire community.
Currently, Phase 1 engineering work has begun on the project, and construction is tentatively scheduled for 2027. Before moving forward, the Forest Preserve District plans to host a public open house in September to present the proposed plans and gather feedback from residents. This event will provide an opportunity for the community to voice their opinions and contribute to the development of the trail.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Forest Preserve District to expand and improve its network of trails, ensuring that more people can enjoy the natural beauty of the area. As the project progresses, it is expected to bring increased foot traffic to nearby parks and preserves, supporting local businesses and promoting environmental awareness.
With a focus on sustainability and accessibility, the Weber Road Trail project represents a significant investment in the future of outdoor recreation in Will County. As the planning continues, residents can look forward to a new trail that will connect communities, promote healthy living, and preserve the region’s natural resources for generations to come.
