WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) – Ash might appear like any other charming fluffy companion, but he has a significant role to play.
He is the latest addition to the Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS team, assigned to provide a welcoming presence for first responders following demanding situations.
“We witness the most difficult moments of people’s lives repeatedly throughout the day. If this small companion can offer some comfort to firefighters or emergency medical service personnel when they return to the station, it will be a worthwhile investment for us,” said Chief R.M. Flowers.
Although it will require some funds to certify Ash as a therapy dog, the department did not spend any money to get him.
The fire department states that the puppy, believed to be a purebred silver lab, was given by an unknown member of the community.
We inquired about how he is adapting to the new position.
“I mean, if you look at him, you can already tell. Dogs don’t really care how bad your day has been. They’re just glad to see you,” said Battalion Chief Jeremy Wetherington.
The department states that it believes Ash is the first therapy dog at a fire station in Eastern Carolina.
We contacted several places and couldn’t locate another fire department that had one.
Although Ash is primarily intended for the staff at this location, it will also be utilized in public education and community gatherings.
“I believe it will be a significant advantage. I think it will serve as a recruitment resource for us in the future and also help retain our staff. I believe it will be a valuable addition for the public,” Chief Flowers added.
