VPN trail leads to arrest of two Delhi cops over embezzlement charges

Delhi Police Unravels Embezzlement Case Involving Two Sub-Inspectors

Delhi Police recently made a significant breakthrough in an embezzlement case involving two sub-inspectors from the northeast district. The case revolved around the misappropriation of funds from case property, and the police were able to trace and arrest the accused using advanced digital techniques.

According to officials, the two sub-inspectors had gone missing after allegedly diverting funds through fraudulent means. They reportedly traveled to several locations, including Goa, before settling in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where they were eventually arrested. The police team was able to track them down by cracking a virtual private network (VPN) trail, which played a crucial role in identifying their location.

The investigation began when irregularities were noticed during the disposal of cases registered at the northeast Delhi Cyber Police Station. Three FIRs were filed against the investigating officer who had been missing since 19 March. A dedicated team was formed under the leadership of Inspector Rahul, SHO of the Cyber Police Station, which included sub-inspector Nandan Singh, head constables Amit and Rohan, and constable Deepak.

The team worked tirelessly to gather evidence and trace the movements of the accused. During the course of the investigation, they discovered a cyber fraud involving ₹75 lakh. This amount was allegedly transferred through four separate fraudulent transactions, with the help of fake judicial orders obtained through dishonest means.

Based on technical surveillance and information gathered from various sources, the police were able to trace the accused to Indore. On 18 July, a joint operation was conducted with local police in Emerald City, opposite Aurobindo Hospital, where the accused were apprehended. The arrested individuals included Ankur Malik, a 32-year-old resident of Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh, and his female associate.

During the raid, a substantial amount of assets were recovered, including ₹12 lakh, 820 grams of gold coins/bars, 200 grams of gold jewellery, 11 smartphones, one laptop, three ATM cards, and other documents. These items were seized from the premises where the accused were staying.

Interrogation of the arrested individuals revealed details about their associates. Based on this information, further raids were conducted, leading to the arrest of three more suspects: Mohammad Ilyaas (40), Arif (35), and Shadab (23), all residents of northeast Delhi.

According to sources, the accused were using a VPN to conceal their online activities. However, the police were able to crack the encryption and trace their movements. The two sub-inspectors had planned to settle in Indore and had taken a rented flat. They used the bank accounts of the other three arrested individuals to transfer the embezzled funds.

This case highlights the importance of digital forensics in modern policing. The ability of the Delhi Police to trace the accused through a complex network of online activities demonstrates their efficiency and commitment to upholding justice. The recovery of valuable assets and the arrest of multiple suspects mark a major success in the fight against corruption within the police force.
