Across multiple counties, cooling centers will be available to help the community stay hydrated and healthy.
With temperatures rising, the community is preparing like never before to keep the town cool. Recent flooding in Triadelphia and Valley Grove has volunteers working long, exhausting shifts under the beating sun.
“We strongly recommend that during this heat wave, you work only in short spurts—just brief periods of time. Take time to rest, make sure you’re staying well-hydrated, and work in the shade if possible—or at least rest in the shade for a while. Be sure you’re getting proper nutrition as well. Rest is important, and staying as cool as possible is key,” said Dr. Lisa Hrutkay, Medical Director for Ohio County EMS.
Elm Grove, Wheeling, Triadelphia, and Valley Grove are just a few of the areas that will have designated places for residents to cool down. Misters, water, health professionals, and other services will be available.
“Been out in the heat all day? Whether you’re working—construction workers, the National Guard—whoever wants to come in, we’ll give you something to drink, something to munch on, and a place to sit down, relax, and cool off,” said Bo Mcconnaughy, President Elm Grove Civics.
Emergency Management Director Lou Vargo urges anyone in need of a cool place to stay to call 304-234-3756. The EMA will then direct your call to the closest cooling shelter.
