Vehicle Check-Up in the Hills: Nuwara Eliya Edition

On May 23rd, an urgent examination of both public and private transportation leaving Nuwara Eliya was carried out. This operation was led by Nuwara Eliya’s District Chief Motor Vehicle Inspector, Mr. Jaliya Bandara, working alongside the Traffic Division of the Nuwara Eliya Police department.

The operation focused on inspecting SLTB buses, private buses, and various vehicles with regard to their fitness for carrying passengers. Consequently, out of these, 10 SLTB buses, 8 privately owned buses, and 4 trucks were deemed unsuitable for service and were consequently taken out of commission temporarily.

Owners have been allotted 30 days to address the noted issues and resubmit the vehicles for examination. Non-compliance will lead to legal proceedings at the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court.

Furthermore, drivers were directed to take out any unapproved gadgets fitted inside their vehicles. Annual revenue licenses for non-conforming vehicles were revoked and will be handed back solely after they meet the requirements and pass another inspection.

The examination carried out across various points in Nuwara Eliya is a component of an area-wide effort focused on improving road safety and maintaining superior standards for public transportation, as stated by Mr. Bandara.
