USM Launches College Readiness Program for RISE Students

Introducing the First-Ever Summer College Readiness Program for Students with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A new initiative is helping incoming students at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and those considering enrollment get a head start on their college journey. This first-of-its-kind two-day event is designed to introduce students to life as a Golden Eagle, offering a glimpse into what it means to be part of the USM community.

The program was specifically created for students with intellectual or developmental disabilities, ensuring they receive the support and resources needed to succeed in a college environment. This marks the beginning of the university’s inaugural Summer College Readiness Program, which is hosted by USM’s RISE (Reaching, Including, Supporting, Educating) To The Top initiative.

During the event, participants had the opportunity to explore the campus through guided tours, giving them a sense of what to expect in terms of academic and social life. They also experienced a mock class, allowing them to engage with the learning environment in a practical way. Additionally, students learned about USM spirit from the university’s mascot, “Seymour,” adding a fun and engaging element to the experience.

Danielle Mullins, the executive coordinator of the RISE To The Top Program, emphasized the mission of the initiative. “Our goal is to support these students in their journey to reach the top, through employment preparation, academics, and student life,” she said.

Mullins highlighted that the program is not just about orientation—it’s about long-term success. “These students do actually fully graduate from this university, and they will receive a full certificate from USM and RISE To The Top,” she added. This certification is a testament to the program’s commitment to providing meaningful educational opportunities for all students.

Looking ahead, Mullins anticipates enrolling approximately eight students in the RISE To The Top program this fall. This small cohort size ensures personalized attention and tailored support for each participant, helping them navigate the challenges and opportunities of higher education.

The Summer College Readiness Program is just one example of how USM is expanding its efforts to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. By offering specialized programs like RISE To The Top, the university is taking important steps toward ensuring that every student has the chance to thrive.
