(H5N1 Influenza) was mentioned by an official on Saturday.

In an interview with ANI, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Vikas Yadav mentioned that the zoo submitted 34 samples for examination 10 days prior, and among those, five tested positive for H5N1.

He mentioned that new samples will be dispatched once more for additional testing.

“Among the five confirmed positive cases are two leopards found in Siddharthnagar, one deceased tiger, an injured vulture, and several dead crows,” stated Yadav. “All necessary procedures and safety precautions are being adhered to. These findings stem from tests conducted ten days ago, and we eagerly await newer specimens which we expect will show negative results,” he added.

DFO Yadav added that the zoo, initially closed until May 27, will remain shut until all

tests return negative results.

On May 18, two creatures at Kanpur Zoo—a lion and a peacock—also tested positive for H5N1.

After a tigress died from avian flu, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to temporarily shut down all zoos and safari parks in the state starting May 14 as a preventive step.

As per an official announcement, the impacted zoos have put into place rigorous scientific biosecurity protocols, sanitation processes, and initiated serological monitoring to assess antibody presence for contagious illnesses.

H5N1, which is a strain of avian influenza virus classified under type A influenzaviruses, is extremely infectious and primarily impacts birds, particularly domesticated fowl like chickens, ducks, and turkeys. This particular variant stands out as both one of the deadliest and most recognized forms of the disease.
