The University of Louisville is one of five institutions currently facing a civil rights inquiry.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the inquiry will assess if the universities are offering scholarships exclusively to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or “undocumented” students.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, the department’s Office for Civil Rights stated that these scholarships would breach Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which forbids discrimination based on national origin.
The Legal Insurrection Foundation’s Equal Protection Project filed complaints against the schools, aiming to guarantee equal protection under the law and prevent any government-related discrimination.
The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is specifically examining three scholarships at UofL:
- Sagar Patagundi Scholarship, designed to “help reduce the expenses of higher education…for undergraduate DACA and undocumented students.”
- Dawn Wilson Grant for “undergraduate LGBTQ+ students of color.”
- Louisville Tango Festival Scholarship aimed at “Latino/a/x and Hispanic students.”
Additional inquiries were initiated against the University of Nebraska Omaha, the University of Miami, the University of Michigan, and Western Michigan University.
