Prof. Florence Obi, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, has encouraged Nigerian youth to strive for success through dedication and ambition in their professional lives.
On Tuesday, during her visit to Calabar, Professor Obi addressed students about their prospective careers. She imparted valuable insights into life lessons from her own experiences, fond recollections of her youth, and advice for professional development. Interestingly, she mentioned that she did not have a role model as a child but found inspiration instead from her contemporaries who were fortunate enough to receive secondary schooling.
She stated, “I looked up to them and yearned to become one of them. Many of us lacked those opportunities until later in life. This admiration ignited my passion for learning.”

The venture capitalist who highlighted the significance of enthusiasm and ability stated, “Choosing the incorrect profession can result in enduring discontentment. Pursue what ignites your interest, yet acknowledge where your talents lie as well. For instance, if nurturing others brings you joy but grappling with scientific concepts proves challenging, perhaps a career in healthcare might not suit you best. Reflecting on her early aspirations, Professor Obi stated, “In my community, teachers held the highest regard and were seen as role models.”

She motivated children and young people to stay concentrated, disciplined, and devoted in their prayers, cautioning them against diversions such as joining cults or cheating on exams. She also mentioned, “The university experience isn’t solely centered around studies; get involved in clubs, participate in athletics, and form beneficial relationships.”
