ULM Trio Program Secures .36 Million from Department of Education

Supporting Students in Uncharted Waters

For many students in Louisiana, college represents a new chapter filled with both excitement and uncertainty. The University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) is working to ease this transition through its TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program. This initiative aims to provide essential resources and guidance to students who might otherwise struggle to navigate the complexities of higher education.

ULM’s SSS Program recently secured a significant $1.36 million grant from the Department of Education. This funding will be instrumental in supporting more than 140 students over the next five years. The program offers a comprehensive range of services, including tutoring, academic advising, financial literacy training, and career preparation. These resources are designed to help students overcome obstacles and succeed in their academic journeys.

The program specifically targets students from low-income families, first-generation college students, and those with disabilities. These groups often face unique challenges that can hinder their ability to complete their degrees. By providing tailored support, the SSS Program seeks to level the playing field and ensure all students have the opportunity to thrive.

Financial hardship is a significant issue across the United States, and Louisiana is no exception. According to the United For ALICE organization, which assesses financial hardships and poverty levels nationwide, a substantial portion of households in Louisiana struggle to make ends meet. In 2023, 19% of households earned below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), while 30% were classified as ALICE — meaning they earned above the FPL but not enough to afford basic living expenses. Combining these two groups, 50% of households in Louisiana fell below the ALICE Threshold.

This data underscores the importance of programs like ULM’s SSS. The program has been making a difference in the lives of students since it was established in 2015. ULM’s Executive Director for TRIO Programs, Catherine Estis, highlights the positive impact the program has had on students in Monroe and beyond.

In the 2023-24 academic year, the ULM SSS Program achieved impressive results. It maintained a 91% persistence rate, meaning most students continued their studies without interruption. All students maintained a 100% academic standing, and 63% graduated within six years. These statistics reflect the program’s effectiveness in helping students reach their full potential.

As the TRIO grant continues to support the program over the next five years, ULM and its staff are committed to fostering an inclusive culture and delivering crucial services. The goal is to ensure that every student, regardless of background or circumstance, has the tools and support needed to succeed in college and beyond.

By addressing the unique needs of students and providing them with the necessary resources, ULM’s SSS Program is making a meaningful difference in the lives of many. As the program continues to grow and evolve, it remains a vital resource for students navigating the uncharted waters of higher education.
