A Skate for Ukraine: Supporting the Fight from an Ice Rink
In the heart of Wake Forest, a community came together on an ice rink to show support for Ukraine through a special event called “Skate for Ukraine.” This initiative brought together Ukrainians and Americans, uniting them in their shared commitment to aid Ukraine in its ongoing struggle against Russian aggression.
Deb Elek, a veteran from Wake Forest, expressed her strong feelings about supporting Ukraine. She emphasized that she believed Ukraine was an independent and sovereign country, and it was crucial to help defend its democracy. Her passion for the cause was so intense that she even considered leaving her life in North Carolina to join the fight.
“My plan was to go and put on a uniform and go fight with them, but my family, my neighbors,” said Elek. “Really. There’s other ways you can help Ukraine.”
For Elek, that meant lacing up her skates. The proceeds from the skating fees at Polar Ice in Wake Forest are being directed towards relief efforts in Ukraine. This event is just one example of how individuals can contribute to the cause in meaningful ways.
Personal Stories Behind the Support
Misha Shvets, who came to study at the University of North Carolina, now finds himself juggling life and work while dealing with the reality of bombings in his home country. His family still lives in Dnipro, and the situation there has become increasingly dire.
“The reality is the bombings only get harder, the weapons only evolve. My mother, who is in the city of Dnipro, is saying that the last bombing was like she had never experienced before, even though it was a few miles away, it felt like it was in her backyard,” he said.
Three years after the invasion, Shvets highlighted that for many, the situation in Ukraine remains very real, despite the fact that it sometimes fades from the headlines. He explained that while they may be showcasing beautiful art and smiling, they are also actively fundraising and shipping medical and humanitarian aid back home to ensure those wounded can survive.
Ongoing Efforts and Contributions
Members of the Ukrainian community in the Carolinas have made several trips each year to deliver supplies to Ukraine. These efforts are vital in providing much-needed assistance to those affected by the conflict. Their dedication reflects the deep connection many Ukrainians feel to their homeland, even when they are far away.
Through events like “Skate for Ukraine,” individuals can find ways to contribute without necessarily having to be on the front lines. Whether through fundraising, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness, there are numerous opportunities for people to make a difference.
The story of Ukraine continues to unfold, and the support from communities across the United States plays a crucial role in sustaining hope and resilience. As the world watches, the determination of those involved in these efforts serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of solidarity and compassion in times of crisis.
