UK Couple Convicted of Newborn’s Murder

The Tragic Case of a British Aristocrat and Her Boyfriend

A British aristocrat, Constance Marten, and her boyfriend, Mark Gordon, were recently convicted of gross negligence manslaughter in the death of their newborn daughter. The case has drawn significant attention due to the couple’s privileged background and the shocking circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.

The trial, which took place at London’s Central Criminal Court, marked the second time the couple faced legal consequences for their actions. During their first trial, they were found guilty of perverting the course of justice, concealing the birth of a child, and child cruelty. This conviction came after they had secretly given birth to a girl named Victoria, with their other four children having been taken by the courts due to concerns about potential harm.

Despite her affluent upbringing and connections to the royal family, Marten chose to reject her privilege. She lived a life that often involved not paying rent and even scavenging for food while on the run. The couple’s decision to flee led them to endure harsh conditions, including camping in freezing environments and relying on discarded items for survival.

The police launched an extensive nationwide search that lasted seven weeks after a placenta was discovered in the couple’s burned-out and abandoned car in north-western England on 5 January 2023. The search highlighted the couple’s efforts to evade detection, as they spent hundreds of pounds on taxi rides to move around the country without using credit cards or any identifiable means of tracking.

After their arrest in Brighton on 27 February, the couple refused to disclose the baby’s whereabouts. Mark Gordon, who had previously served over 20 years in a U.S. prison for rape, responded dismissively when questioned about the baby’s welfare, saying, “What’s the big deal?”

Two days later, the baby’s decomposed body was found in a shopping bag under rubbish in a garden shed. Prosecutors stated that the infant either died from hypothermia or was suffocated. The couple claimed it was a tragic accident that occurred while Marten was asleep.

During the second trial, both defendants testified but cut their testimonies short during cross-examination. Marten criticized the prosecution, calling them “heartless” and “diabolical.” The couple is set to be sentenced on 15 September, marking the end of a harrowing chapter in their lives and a deeply troubling case that has captured public attention.
