William Keyes was sworn into office as the new
United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia
on Tuesday, taking over the role officially after serving as interim U.S. Attorney since June 20.
“It is a tremendous honor to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, and I am incredibly grateful that President Trump and Attorney General Bondi have placed their trust in me,” Keyes said in a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia. “I care deeply for this District and look forward to working closely with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners on behalf of all Middle Georgians. Together, we will protect our communities and uphold the rule of law.”
The press release says Keyes began his legal career at a law firm in Atlanta, and started his tenure with the U.S. Department of Justice in 2018, when he became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia. Before joining the office, Keyes was on active duty in the U.S. Army.
Per the release, Keyes prosecuted alleged members of Al-Qaeda in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He also served at Camp Arifjan, where he was a legal advisor to soldiers operating in the area of Kuwait and Iraq.
Keyes earned the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School, according to the release.
The release says Keyes also earned four degrees from the University of Georgia – including a master’s in economics and an undergraduate in statistics. Keyes lives with his wife in Macon, where they are raising two sons.
