Two Longtime Local Lawmakers Pass Away

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The Black Hills is mourning the passing of two long-time local legislators. Lyndell Petersen passed away Tuesday at the age of 93.

Petersen served in the South Dakota State Senate from 1977 to 1994. He was a Pennington County Commissioner from 2011 to 2016. Petersen was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2019. In addition, he served the Central States Fair in some capacity for decades and was instrumental in the Western Junior Livestock Show and the South Dakota Buckaroos.

And former South Dakota State Senator Mac McCracken passed away last Friday at the age of 83. McCracken served in the State Senate from 2001 through 2008. He also gave his time to many community and civic organizations over the years.
