The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Abia State Sector Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday. Sector Commander Ngozi Ezeoma expressed deep regret over the fatal crash and detailed the circumstances surrounding the event. According to her, the FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the report at 4:33 p.m., initiating emergency response operations immediately.
Six individuals were involved in the accident, including two males, three females, and a child. Of these, four people sustained injuries—comprising one male, two females, and a child. Tragically, two individuals were confirmed dead. The victims have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for medical care, while the deceased have been placed in the FMC mortuary for further procedures.
Ezeoma noted that preliminary investigations suggest the probable cause of the crash was a violation of the speed limit, exacerbated by adverse weather conditions. At the time of the incident, it was raining, which likely affected visibility and vehicle control. Despite the road being paved, the wet conditions may have contributed to the collision.
The FRSC has extended its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the injured a swift recovery. In addition, the organization urged all road users, particularly commercial drivers, to adhere to speed limits, especially during bad weather. It emphasized the importance of caution and patience on the roads at all times.
The FRSC remains dedicated to its mission of promoting safer roads and improving the quality of life for residents of Abia State and beyond.
