MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The Montgomery Humane Society is seeking the community’s support as it deals with a significant increase in the number of animals coming in.
Only in June, over 720 dogs and cats were brought into the shelter. Executive Director Steven Tears mentions that these figures are causing significant pressure on the staff, available space, and supplies.
It’s very costly,” Tears said, “the amount of medicine needed to keep them healthy, the quantity of food we provide twice a day. It’s just extremely expensive during this time of year.
Animals that come to the shelter include those lost on the streets as well as pets given up by their owners.
In order to address the emergency, the shelter is asking people to participate. Contributions specifically cover the expenses for food, medical items, and regular care. Assistants are required on days with a large number of animals, and temporary homes for pets can be provided by foster families until they find permanent adoption.
The shelter also provides adoption discounts during the year to help make pet ownership more budget-friendly. However, Tears advises those considering adoption to be honest about the financial and time commitments involved in welcoming a new animal into their home.
Even though the emotional choice is ‘I want a dog,’ there might be times when it’s not the best option,” he said. “The initial veterinary bill will likely exceed $100. You need to be ready for that.
