Trump pledges renewed U.S. effort for Sudan peace

U.S. Steps Up Diplomatic Efforts to Address the Crisis in Sudan

On July 9, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump made a public statement about ongoing efforts to promote peace in Sudan. During a meeting at the White House with leaders from several African nations, including Liberia, Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, and Guinea-Bissau, Trump emphasized that his administration was actively working to facilitate peace in regions facing significant challenges.

This announcement came shortly after Massad Boulos, an advisor to the president on African affairs, revealed plans for a diplomatic initiative involving four key nations. In an interview broadcast on July 2 by Asharq TV, Boulos stated that the United States would soon host a meeting of foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt in Washington. The purpose of this gathering is to revive the “Quartet” initiative, which aims to bring stability to the region.

The U.S. involvement in Sudan comes at a critical time, as the position of the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan remains unfilled. Since the end of Tom Perriello’s term, no new appointee has been named. A senior State Department official, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, confirmed that there are currently no new personnel announcements regarding the role. However, the official reiterated the administration’s commitment to resolving the crisis in Sudan.

“The United States remains focused on the resolution of the crisis in Sudan, communicating with the warring parties, and coordinating with our international partners to urge a durable end to the conflict,” the official said.

Humanitarian Aid Continues Amid Ongoing Conflict

The war in Sudan has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions of people affected. Despite the ongoing violence, the U.S. continues to provide aid to those in need. According to the State Department official, more than 65,000 metric tons of U.S. bulk wheat grain and wheat flour recently arrived in Port Sudan. This amount is sufficient to feed 3.2 million people for a month, offering much-needed relief to the population.

Additionally, aid is being extended to over four million people who have fled to seven neighboring countries. The official highlighted the importance of ensuring that all parties involved in the conflict allow for the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance. This includes protecting the lives of aid workers and civilians caught in the crossfire.

International Collaboration and Future Talks

In parallel with U.S. efforts, the United Nations has also taken steps to address the situation in Sudan. The UN envoy is finalizing plans for separate talks in Ethiopia, in collaboration with the African Union. These discussions aim to explore new avenues for peace and stability in the region.

The U.S. has consistently emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing global conflicts. By engaging with regional actors and international organizations, the administration hopes to create a more structured approach to resolving the long-standing issues in Sudan.

As the conflict continues, the focus remains on finding a sustainable solution that brings lasting peace to the region. The U.S. and its allies continue to work together, ensuring that humanitarian needs are met while pursuing diplomatic channels to end the violence.
