Trailer Detaches, Strikes Two on Highway: Suspect Allegedly Flees

Two cars were hit by a trailer that disconnected from a truck on the highway in Belfair late Thursday morning, sending one to the hospital while the truck’s driver reportedly took off.

A statement from Washington State Patrol said the collision occurred around 11 a.m. while the three drivers involved were headed south. On Highway 3 near mile 27, a black utility trailer unhitched from the suspect’s vehicle and struck a car driven by a woman, 37, before continuing and hitting a car driven by a 68-year-old woman of Port Orchard.

Both northbound and southbound lanes were blocked by the two impacted cars and the vehicle. According to WSP, the suspect continued south after the crash in an unknown white vehicle.

The victims’ vehicles were totaled and towed, along with the trailer, which WSP said was significantly damaged as well. Emergency services arrived and transported the 37-year-old victim to St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor to treat injuries sustained from the accident.

The suspect’s identity and whereabouts are unknown at this time.
