A cloud of grief has engulfed a family in Ngusero village, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of four family members.

The family, along with their six tenants, were travelling to Moshi town to attend the wedding of a relative when the incident occurred.

What caused Kilimanjaro accident?

According to Mwananchi Digital, the crash involved a minibus ferrying the wedding guests and a Chanel One company bus headed to Moshi from Tanga.

The two vehicles collided head-on and burst into flames while passengers were still inside.

Tragically, a total of 38 people perished, while 29 others sustained injuries in the crash, which occurred in the Sabasaba area of Same town.

Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Nurdin Babu, confirmed the incident, noting that 24 people were rushed to Same District Hospital, while the remaining five were referred to KCMC and Mawenzi Regional Hospitals.

Family speaks after losing 6 members

Abdallah Kiluvia, who lost four relatives and six tenants in the accident, said that 98% of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

Kiluvia described the loss as devastating for the entire family, as they not only lost their own kin but also the six tenants who had joined them for the wedding.

“I have lost my brother, his wife, their two children, and two other family members. They were all going to my nephew’s wedding when the accident happened just 3km from Same town. They were burnt beyond recognition,” said Kiluvia.

He noted that they had accepted it as God’s will and were now awaiting DNA test results to help identify the bodies, so they could be given a proper send-off according to Islamic rites.

Ramadhani Kiluvia, who lost his mother and younger sibling, said he was in Moshi preparing for the evening wedding and was waiting for his mother and other relatives to arrive.

“They started their journey around 4 pm and we were eagerly awaiting them. I then received a call informing me there had been an accident involving the vehicle carrying my family. I immediately hung up and tried to call my mum, but she didn’t answer,” said Ramadhani.

The heartbroken son recalled the last conversation he had with his mother before the trip.

“I’m the firstborn and was already at the wedding venue. Mum told me she would come with my two younger siblings, but now, they are gone,” he added through tears.
