Torrential rain devastates structures and farmlands in Kuje

A heavy rainstorm occurring from Monday night until early Tuesday morning caused significant damage throughout the Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, resulting in widespread destruction. The storm, which included strong winds and sudden flooding, damaged homes, bush bars, traditional eateries, and agricultural lands.

A reporter states that numerous residents and business owners have been impacted, disrupting local farming.

The most severely affected areas are Gudaba, Kuchiyakwo, and Pegi, where conventional bamboo-and-thatch buildings that served as eateries and community meeting places were entirely ruined.

Fields prepared for harvest, abundant with corn, cassava, yams, and produce, were also flooded, erasing months of diligent work.

One of the people impacted, Mr. Hassan, a local farmer, stated that he lost two different parts of his maize farm due to the flood. He mentioned, “My first corn field was entirely ruined on Monday, and by Tuesday morning, the other area was also flooded. It’s very disappointing because I rely heavily on this farmland for my crops.”

Abuja Metro notes that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had, in its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction published earlier this year, predicted higher-than-normal rainfall in the North Central region, covering the FCT. NiMet warned that these conditions might result in localized flooding, particularly in areas with inadequate drainage and unchecked urban expansion.
