Torfaen’s Valiant Support for the Armed Forces

Celebrating Armed Forces Week in Torfaen

Armed Forces Week holds a special place in the hearts of many in Torfaen, and I was proud to take part in the national flag-raising ceremony at New Palace Yard at the beginning of the week. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our military personnel and the enduring importance of their service.

Torfaen has long been a strong supporter of the Armed Forces, and it is essential that we express our gratitude to the local forces community. The presence of Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov and representatives from our military during the ceremony highlighted the ongoing global fight for freedom. It was a moving experience to witness such a diverse group come together in recognition of shared values and common goals.

The significance of this event was further reflected in Pontypool, where a similar flag-raising took place. I would like to extend my appreciation to Cllr Gaynor James, who has been a passionate advocate for the Armed Forces. Her dedication has inspired Torfaen to lead the way in supporting military families. Initiatives such as backdating housing applications for Armed Forces families and implementing a guaranteed interview scheme for veterans have set a positive example for other councils to follow. These efforts underscore the deep respect we hold for those who have served our nation.

Engaging with Local Schools

I recently had the pleasure of welcoming pupils from Cwmffrwdoer Primary School to Parliament. It was a rewarding experience to guide them through the building and explain the role of MPs. The students asked thoughtful questions, and I hope their visit provided a valuable insight into the work that takes place here. Their enthusiasm and conduct were a testament to the quality of education they receive at their school.

For any schools interested in arranging a similar visit, I encourage you to reach out to my office. We are always keen to support educational opportunities and help young people gain a better understanding of how their local representatives work.

World Heritage Day in Blaenavon

It is always an honour to lead the World Heritage Day parade in my hometown of Blaenavon. This year marked a significant milestone as we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Blaenavon’s industrial landscape being granted World Heritage Status. This recognition highlights the area’s rich history and its contribution to the development of industry in the UK.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the volunteers who worked tirelessly to organise the event, as well as to everyone who attended and supported the parade. Their efforts ensured that the day was both memorable and meaningful for all involved.

Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour

In Torfaen, issues such as antisocial behaviour and illegal off-road biking continue to affect our communities. These problems not only disrupt daily life but also undermine the sense of safety and belonging that residents deserve. I strongly support Labour’s recent announcement to invest £200 million in recruiting 13,000 neighbourhood police officers and PCSOs.

The first phase of this initiative will see 40 officers, 13 PCSOs, and 7 Special Constables deployed in Gwent, with the aim of strengthening neighbourhood policing and improving public safety. This investment reflects a commitment to addressing these challenges head-on and ensuring that our streets remain safe for everyone.
