A prominent Democratic member of the House has recently requested information from the Department of Justice regarding President Donald Trump’s strategy for issuing pardons during his second term. The representative specifically wants to know whether the president is limiting these acts of clemency to individuals who have shown unwavering loyalty to him.
CBS News reported Friday
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), who serves as the ranking member on the influential House Judiciary Committee, has penned a letter to DOJ pardon attorney Ed Martin. In this correspondence, he poses specific queries regarding the standards employed by Trump when considering official pardons and commutations. Raskin criticized Martin for allegedly leveraging his position to grant pardons as rewards exclusively to those who have shown unwavering loyalty to the president politically and financially, thereby neglecting numerous standard petitions for leniency from individuals awaiting their turn through regular channels.
As per Raskin’s statement, the updated guidelines for issuing pardons seem to encompass: demonstrating unwavering individual and political allegiance to President Trump; making significant monetary donations to MAGA and the President’s political circles; as well as participating in acts of political misconduct and aggression that bolster MAGA influence and autocracy.

At his Friday press conference alongside Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in the Oval Office, President Trump refrained from dismissing the possibility of granting clemency to music industry executive Sean “Diddy” Combs. Combs is presently undergoing a trial involving numerous allegations such as human trafficking, kidnapping, forced labor, arson, and bribery. During this event, former Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), who had been found guilty of bribery and failure to disclose activities as a foreign agent, was also present.
