Tony Finau Seeks Improved Play on the Course

When Tony Finau was invited to portray himself in the new movie “Happy Gilmore 2,” the PGA veteran didn’t need much time to agree.

I had never been involved in something like that before,” Finau stated. “My brief appearance in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ was enjoyable, and it was great working with Adam Sandler. Being asked to participate was a real honor, as I’ve been a big fan of ‘Happy Gilmore’ since I was young.

However, even though there is excitement in being part of something new by appearing in a Hollywood film that will be released this weekend, Finau told reporters on Wednesday, ahead of the 3M Open – which is also taking place this weekend – that he is seeking something more familiar: a sense of comfort in his performance on the golf course.

I just know this season hasn’t felt like a successful one for me. I haven’t played my best golf,” Finau mentioned. “I feel that when I have played well, I haven’t been able to close out tournaments. So, I don’t feel like I’ve gotten much out of my game this year.

I believe it’s clear that victories are the simplest way to reflect and say, ‘okay, this was a successful season,’ but I’ve had many seasons where I finished and still felt that even without winning, it was a very successful year. I suppose I’m more of a gut feeling person; by the end of the year, I just know whether I had a season worth remembering or not.

The figures support those emotions.

Finau, who shares the record with Xander Schauffele for the most consecutive TOUR Championship qualifications among active players (eight and still ongoing), is seeing that streak at risk this season. He is currently ranked 59th in the FedExCup standings, having not secured any victories for the second consecutive year, following four titles over the previous two seasons.

Finau is aware that a strong performance in the near future could secure him a Top 50 placement, ensuring his participation in next year’s major events and bringing him closer to a possible journey to East Lake for the TOUR Championship at the end of the month.

It’s definitely at the back of my mind because I understand how crucial that top-50 ranking has become on the PGA TOUR. So it’s definitely something that’s in the back of my mind, but that’s where it stays. What’s really on my mind this week is playing well. In my experience, if you play good golf, things tend to take care of themselves.

He started strongly at The Open last week with two rounds below par, but then dropped out of the competition after two lackluster follow-up rounds.

He’s adopting a positive outlook from that experience. This could certainly be reasonable. Finau has participated in all six iterations of the 3M Open and has never placed lower than T28.

I’m hopeful about the week. I began the week well last week at The Open, but didn’t have the weekend I had hoped for. There were many positive aspects to take from last week and build upon, and I’m looking forward to continuing my progress into this weekend.
