A multitude of athletes surged into Jinja City today, demonstrating a strong sense of communal unity, wellness awareness, and cultural heritage at the inaugural 2025 “Run the Nile” Marathon.
Hosted by FIST Uganda in collaboration with the Busoga Kingdom, this event drew experienced athletes as well as newcomers who were keen to join one of the area’s most significant health initiatives.
As early as 5 am, the Dams Water Sports Pitch was brimming with enthusiasm.
Covering distances between 2 kilometers and 21 kilometers, the event attracted a wide array of attendees including children, seniors, seasoned athletes, and everyday people, all energized by tunes, rhythmic beats, and the inspiring spirit of a common purpose.
Exactly at 7 am, Deputy Katuukiro of Busoga Kingdom, Ahmed Noor Osman, commenced the race with a flag-off ceremony.
His ceremonial launch set off a human wave across the city, as runners traversed Jinja’s scenic routes in a marathon that was as festive as it was purposeful.
Present among the esteemed guests were Mr Benon Kigenyi, the Deputy Executive Director of KCCA, along with the Mayor of Jinja Southern Division and various local leaders whose attendance underscored the event’s emphasis on well-being, cohesion, and collective effort within the community.
As the quickest runners surged past the finish line—many hailing from the 21 km division—the spectators burst into thunderous applause, greeting them with shouts that embodied the pride of an area in progress.
“Nelson, CEO of FIST Uganda, stated at the finish line, ‘This goes beyond just a competition—it’s a movement towards better health and brighter hopes,'” he remarked.
He stated that the funds raised from the marathon would be used to buy medical gear for Health Center IVs in Jinja City.
We extend our gratitude to each participant and collaborator for making today possible. United, we are saving lives.
Assistant Director Kigenyi emphasized the significance of joint efforts, urging citizens to uphold their health through physical activity as well as contribute positively to environmental stewardship.
“A pristine, verdant city starts with individuals who cherish their well-being. This marathon serves as a reminder of that crucial connection,” he stated.
Ahmed Noor Osman commended the flawless organization and energetic involvement.
He stated, ‘The Busoga Kingdom strongly supports initiatives that impact the lives of our citizens.’
Maintaining health is among our primary focuses. We remain committed to expanding and enhancing these efforts for the well-being of our communities.
He took the opportunity to gather backing for comparable communal initiatives, encouraging people from Busoga to embrace a participatory mindset and unity in tackling regional healthcare and developmental issues.
The event garnered support from development partners and sponsors who praised the marathon’s attendance and how well it aligned with long-term objectives for health and social progress in the area.
Many stated they would boost their backing in subsequent versions.
As stated by the organizers, the initial request made to the Kyabazinga of Busoga—which played a crucial role in initiating the marathon—stemmed from his significant focus on wellness throughout his rule.
This vision has now become an event powerful enough to inspire thousands.
When night descended and the drums grew silent, the events of the day were deeply imprinted in the hearts of those who took part.
Apart from medals and distance covered, the 2025 Run the Nile Marathon significantly impacted Busoga’s path toward improved well-being and collective self-esteem.
