This Might Be the World’s Most Valuable Ferrari F40

The F40 LM: A Rare and Powerful Legend

Some Ferraris are considered legends, but a select few transcend into the realm of myth. While many regard the F40 as the pinnacle of Ferrari’s engineering, there exists an even rarer and more desirable variant known as the F40 LM. This model was specifically built for racing on both sides of the Atlantic, making it one of the most coveted Ferraris ever produced.

The F40 LM was developed by Michelotto for competition in the American IMSA series and the European FIA-GT championship. Only 19 units were ever made, and each carries a unique history that adds to its allure. One such example is currently set to go up for auction during Monterey Car Week next month. This particular vehicle is number 14 out of the 19 produced and is built to GTC specification, making it the most powerful version of the F40 ever created. If RM Sotheby’s estimates are accurate, this car could fetch between $8.5 million and $9.5 million at auction.

A Racing Legacy Across Continents

This specific F40 LM has a rich and storied past. Chassis number 95448 was originally delivered to a buyer in St. Moritz, Switzerland, who already owned several other Ferraris. Walter Hagmann was the first owner, keeping the car until 2002 before purchasing it again in 2007. Over the years, the car was driven in various racing events across Italy, France, Spain, and the Czech Republic.

In 2014, the F40 LM was returned to Michelotto for a complete overhaul. The engine and gearbox were serviced, and the car was repainted in its original Rosso Corsa color. Since then, it has been owned by collectors in Las Vegas, Germany, and Austria. To prepare for its upcoming sale, the car underwent additional maintenance, including new fuel bladders, timing and accessory belts, spark plugs, and fuel filters. It also received a fresh set of Michelin Pilot Sport GT Slick S7M tires.

Enhanced Performance and Lightweight Design

Like the standard F40, the F40 LM is powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. However, this model features significant upgrades that push its power output to an impressive 760 horsepower—289 hp more than the regular F40. In addition to its increased power, the F40 LM is significantly lighter, shedding around 700 lbs (317 kg) compared to a stock F40. With fluids, it weighs just 2,315 lbs (1,050 kg), making it one of the lightest and most powerful Ferraris ever built.

For enthusiasts who appreciate loud, rare, and high-performance machines, the F40 LM represents the ultimate dream car. Its combination of racing heritage, exclusivity, and raw power makes it a highly sought-after collector’s item.
