This DeLorean Now Roars with a Supercar V8 and Is Ready to Tear Up the Road

The DeLorean DMC-12 is a car that needs no introduction. Known the world over for its iconic role in Back to the Future, it remains one of the most instantly recognizable sports cars in automotive history. However, while its gullwing doors and brushed stainless steel body might suggest performance and innovation, the original Renault-sourced V6 engine left much to be desired in terms of power and driving excitement. That all changed when a passionate team of builders decided to give the classic DeLorean the heart it truly deserved—a 453-horsepower Ferrari V8.

This transformation didn’t happen overnight. The project, which debuted at the 2024 SEMA Show, was still a work in progress at the time of its unveiling. It took months of meticulous engineering, custom fabrication, and countless problem-solving sessions before the car could finally hit the road under its own power. The goal wasn’t just to make the DeLorean faster—it was to preserve a piece of automotive history while giving it a modern performance edge.

A Fusion of Engineering Excellence

At the heart of this build lies the 4.3-liter V8 from a wrecked 2012 Ferrari California. With 453 hp on tap, the engine provides a dramatic increase in power compared to the original V6. To handle this newfound energy, the team paired the engine with a six-speed manual transmission from a Porsche 911—ensuring not only reliability but also a driving experience that matches the car’s bold new capabilities.

But stuffing a powerful engine into a classic chassis brings its own set of challenges. One of the biggest concerns was the DeLorean’s unique backbone chassis, which is inherently more flexible than modern unibody or spaceframe designs. This flexibility was already an issue with the stock engine, so adding a high-output V8 required serious structural reinforcement. The team addressed this by strengthening the chassis to reduce flex and ensure safe, predictable handling.

Performance Upgrades Across the Board

To complement the upgraded powertrain, nearly every mechanical component of the DeLorean was scrutinized and improved:

  • Suspension: KW coilovers were installed for better ride control and adjustability.
  • Bushings and Arms: High-performance bushings and aluminum control arms replaced the stock parts for sharper handling and reduced deflection.
  • Brakes: Larger, high-performance brakes were added to manage the increased speed and power.
  • Wheels and Tires: Custom wheels that maintain the DeLorean’s signature look now house wider Toyo R888 tires, offering enhanced grip and stability.
  • Chassis Reinforcement: Structural modifications ensured the car could safely handle the stresses of the upgraded engine.

These enhancements transformed the once-lackluster DeLorean into a true performer—one capable of turning heads not just for its looks, but for what’s under the hood.

First Drive: Caffeine and Octane

After months of development, the car made its first public appearance at the Caffeine and Octane event in Atlanta, Georgia. Known for drawing some of the most unique and wild builds in the country, the event was the perfect stage for the DeLorean’s debut drive. Attendees were visibly impressed by the level of craftsmanship and the audacity of the concept—an old-school icon reborn with Italian muscle.

While the car had been displayed at SEMA the previous year, it was far from complete. Now, after extensive tuning and testing, it was ready to show what it could really do on the open road.

This DeLorean stands as a testament to what can be achieved when passion meets ingenuity. It’s not just a tribute to a cult classic; it’s a celebration of automotive creativity and the endless possibilities of customization.
