Embracing Happiness Amid Life’s Challenges
Nigeria has long been grappling with a series of economic and social challenges over the past three decades, leading to widespread concerns among its citizens. Issues such as the high cost of food, unreliable transportation, inconsistent electricity supply, poor road conditions, a deteriorating education system, limited access to basic healthcare, and ongoing security threats like insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry continue to affect the daily lives of many. Despite these difficulties, it is crucial to remember that happiness and contentment are rights that should not be denied, regardless of the circumstances.
Life is full of trials and tribulations, and no one is immune to hardship. Illness, the loss of a loved one, job loss, business failure, natural disasters like floods destroying farmlands, and property damage due to fire or other calamities are all part of the human experience. However, these events should not be used as excuses to abandon our pursuit of happiness. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155) that we will be tested with fear, hunger, loss of wealth, or even life itself, but those who remain patient will find joy in their perseverance.
For many, happiness is often associated with material possessions and tangible resources—such as food, schools, hospitals, and other essentials. While these elements are undoubtedly important for survival, they do not solely define happiness. Even in nations where basic needs are met, some individuals still struggle with genuine happiness. This suggests that true contentment comes from within and is not solely dependent on external factors.
It is essential not to let uncontrollable situations hinder our ability to experience joy. No matter how difficult a situation may seem, hope must never be lost. We should strive to create an environment that fosters happiness, both for ourselves and others. This requires learning to accept what we cannot change and focusing on the aspects of life that we can influence. In a world that grows more complex by the day, this mindset becomes increasingly vital.
As believers, we have a responsibility to make life meaningful despite our challenges. When we interact with others, a simple smile can have a powerful impact. A smiling face can brighten someone else’s day and bring positivity into their life. As a Latvian proverb states, “A smiling face is half the meal.” Smiles are free and require no financial investment, yet they can transform emotions and uplift spirits.
Greeting others warmly and with humility is also an important act of kindness. In Islam, greetings are considered a duty rather than just a social formality. The exchange of good wishes has the power to shift someone’s emotional state from sadness to joy. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged his companions to greet people with a cheerful and respectful demeanor. Our greetings should be sincere and capable of making others feel welcomed and valued.
Words carry weight, and the way we speak to others can either uplift or harm their mood. It is important to use our words to spread joy and avoid causing distress. Congratulating others on their achievements, whether big or small, can create a ripple effect of positivity. The Prophet (SAW) emphasized the importance of greeting others first, highlighting that this act reflects sincerity and goodwill.
To maintain inner peace and the right to happiness, certain personal principles must be followed. Prioritizing self-care through adequate rest, a balanced diet, and regular physical activity is essential. Spending quality time with loved ones, nurturing positive relationships, and engaging in mentally stimulating activities like reading and writing also contribute to overall well-being.
Forgiveness plays a significant role in achieving mental tranquility. By overlooking the mistakes of others, we can free ourselves from resentment and find peace. Living in the present, rather than dwelling on the past, is equally important. As the saying goes, “No condition is permanent,” which means there is always room for hope and happiness.
The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Sharh (94:6) that “with every difficulty, there is ease.” This verse serves as a reminder that challenges are temporary, and happiness is a right that we should strive to uphold. Focusing on the positive aspects of life and expressing gratitude for what we have can lead to greater contentment and a deeper sense of fulfillment.
May we all find ways to embrace happiness and encourage others to do the same, seeking guidance from a higher power to live fulfilling and joyful lives.
