The Healing Power of Akuse

With over 40 percent of men still reluctant to talk about their mental health, the serene environment of Akuse may offer a much-needed solution for emotional well-being and psychological resilience. Known for its agricultural activities, Akuse is located in the Lower Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region, between Tema and Akosombo along the Volta Lake. It plays a significant role in the region’s economy, with its proximity to the Volta making it an important area for irrigation and farming. The town also serves as a local hub for trade and commerce, influenced by its connection to the Kpong Hydro Generation Plant and associated industries managed by the Volta River Authority (VRA).

More than just an economic center, Akuse is home to a unique cluster of timeless buildings that tell the story of Ghana’s energy revolution. A residential neighborhood with bungalows for senior staff, administrative offices, a clubhouse, clinic, and staff schools, the VRA enclave is a self-contained community built around colonial quarters. These structures, designed in classic British colonial architectural style, feature wide verandahs, high ceilings, and large windows, all crafted to provide natural cooling in the tropical climate.

Characterized by undulated terrain with elevations up to 600 meters above sea level, Akuse is now a fast-growing community due to several companies operating in the area. However, there is something about Akuse that may not be immediately apparent—an ambient environment suited to attracting wellness tourism. Tucked away in the landscaped green plains is the Volta Residences, offering exquisite contemporary accommodation with an awe-inspiring vista that aids in mental health restoration.

A Personal Journey to Akuse

Burnt out from planning activities leading up to the final rites of a late uncle, PaJohn Dadson sought a place to destress after observing the One Week rites. He decided to take a break and head to the therapeutic town of Akuse. His journey began on the Accra-Akosombo route, branching off at the Akuse junction, where he took the tree-lined avenue to the Volta Residences on the VRA estate.

As the driver maneuvered through the traffic bottleneck along the Tema to Akosombo road, PaJohn settled back in his seat, putting on his earphones and playing two songs by Black Sheriff. As they passed the Shai Hills Resource Reserve, the music resonated deeply with him, reflecting his current state of mind. The lyrics spoke to his feelings of exhaustion and the need to find a way to recharge.

PaJohn shared his thoughts on the importance of acknowledging emotional struggles and seeking calm. He emphasized that it is crucial to let go of stress, especially from city living, and find ways to restore mental well-being. For him, nature and water are the perfect remedies.

The Experience at Volta Residences

The final stretch of the road leading to Akuse brought a sense of calm, with a canopy of trees lining the avenue. Upon arriving at the Volta Residences, PaJohn was struck by the aesthetic appeal of the building. Designed in a motel style, the rooms were arranged in a long block, with a beautiful green garden and blossomed flowers adding to the charm.

Owned and operated by the VRA’s hospitality arm, the Volta Residences caters to guests from various organizations, including GIZ, GIS, Gridco, and others. While the hotel could use more facilities like a swimming pool or a mini-golf pitch, PaJohn found it to be the perfect retreat for his restorative needs.

The rooms at the Garden Lodge were equipped with a double bed, cozy sofa, television, fridge, and ample storage. The bathroom was particularly impressive, offering modern luxury and comfort. There was also another section of housing, the Residences, which featured 3-bedroom apartment bungalows ideal for family getaways.

A Unique Retreat

Volta Residences stands out with its manicured lawn and garden, offering a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Set in a clearing surrounded by woodlands and just a short drive from the expansive Volta River, it provides the perfect setting for relaxation. In just 48 hours, PaJohn felt rejuvenated and ready to face the challenges of modern city life once again.
