The Silent Crisis in Maternal Health

Across Ghana, the data surrounding maternal health reveals a troubling reality: many women begin their journey through pregnancy without support, guidance, or knowledge. They often face this life-changing event alone, unprepared and uninformed. This isolation is not just a personal challenge—it reflects a broader societal issue that needs urgent attention.

The absence of men in critical moments of pregnancy has become increasingly evident. They are no longer present during antenatal visits, delivery, or even in sharing the responsibility of parenthood. In my work, I have learned to pay close attention to what is said—and what remains unsaid. The silence of abandonment speaks volumes. It highlights a hard truth: many men entered relationships for temporary pleasure rather than long-term commitment.

This situation is not about assigning blame. It is about raising awareness and encouraging change. It’s about empowering women, especially young women, to understand that love without responsibility is not genuine love—it is a risk. Women deserve to be treated with respect and support throughout their reproductive journeys.

In 2022, over 71,000 adolescent girls in Ghana became pregnant, many without any support from their partners. A 2021 UNFPA report revealed that a significant number of these pregnancies were unplanned and occurred without access to or knowledge of contraception. This lack of information and resources places young women at a higher risk of complications and long-term consequences.

At our TTYM Global marketplace clinic, more than 60 percent of the pregnant women we serve attend appointments alone, reporting little to no involvement from the father of the child. This trend points to a deeper issue: reproductive decisions are often made without full consent, information, or intention from both parties. As a result, women are left to bear the burden of these choices alone.

Taking Charge of Your Reproductive Health

My message to all women is clear: you owe it to yourself to take control of your reproductive health. Do not wait for someone else to decide when or if you should become a mother. Do not leave your body unprotected while others enjoy the moment and disappear before the reality hits.

Family planning is a powerful tool that can help you make informed choices about your future. There are numerous safe, effective, and affordable contraceptive options available, including pills, injectables, implants, IUDs, condoms, and emergency contraception. These are not tools of shame—they are tools of empowerment, dignity, and freedom.

Reproductive autonomy is your right. It means having the power to decide whether, when, and under what circumstances you want to become a parent. It means taking control of your future instead of surrendering it to someone else’s fleeting intentions.

When you prioritize your health, you protect your dreams. Using contraception allows you to grow emotionally, financially, and physically before stepping into the role of motherhood. By asking the right questions early, you reduce the risk of being left behind and ensure that you are making choices that align with your goals and values.

Making Informed Choices

It’s time to take charge of your reproductive health today. Talk to a midwife, ask questions, and explore the options available to you. Knowledge is power, and understanding your choices can lead to better outcomes for you and your future family.

By advocating for reproductive autonomy, you contribute to a society where women are supported, respected, and empowered. It’s a step toward a healthier, more equitable future for all.
