Texas shines: New U.S. Mint  coin honors state’s space legacy

Texans will soon be able to own a piece of space history with the U.S. Mint’s release of a $1 coin celebrating Texas’ Mission Control atNASA’s Johnson Space Center, as stated in a news release on Tuesday.

The coin, scheduled to be released on July 29, honorsTexas’ role in leading astronautsas they progress America’s path into space.

I’m happy to announce the launch of the American Innovation $1 Coin for the State of Texas,” said Kristie McNally, the acting director of the Mint. “This coin highlights Texas’ important contribution to America’s leadership in space exploration.

The design highlights the Mission Control Center at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston and its assistance to astronauts from across the globe, as stated in the announcement.

The back of the coin shows an American astronaut performing a spacewalk outside theInternational Space Station. It was designed by Artistic Infusion Program designer Ron Sanders and sculpted by Mint medallic artist John McGraw. The inscriptions feature “United States of America” and “Texas.”

The front shows the Statue of Liberty in a side view, along with the words “In God We Trust” and “$1.” It was created by Justin Kunz and shaped by Phebe Hemphill.

The highlighted design of an American astronaut with the International Space Station in the background genuinely honors Texas’ essential part in the space program,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott. “Texas serves as the starting point for Mars, and we are pleased that this coin embodies the essence of innovation and exploration that represents Texas’ trailblazing heritage.

The American Innovation $1 Coin Series, introduced in 2018, showcases distinct designs for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories, highlighting American creativity and groundbreaking accomplishments, as stated in the announcement.

Florida also has a NASA-themed coin.

The latest Texas coin will be sold in rolls and bags via the U.S. Mint’s Product Subscription Service.
