Teen Killed, 3 Injured in Suspected DUI Crash Following Pursuit, Police Report

Tragic Crash in Petaluma Leaves 14-Year-Old Dead and 17-Year-Old Charged

A tragic incident occurred in Petaluma on Saturday night, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old boy and leaving three other teenagers injured. The event began with a police pursuit of a stolen vehicle that ended in a devastating crash. Authorities have confirmed that the driver, a 17-year-old, is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and faces multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter.

The incident started around 10:10 p.m. when officers spotted a possible DUI driver on Lakeville Highway near S McDowell Boulevard. Shortly after, a marked patrol vehicle attempted to stop the driver of a black Kia Sol after observing them swerve into oncoming traffic. Instead of complying, the driver fled from the officers, initiating a high-speed chase.

During the pursuit, the Kia Sol was seen sideswiping another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that incident. However, about three minutes later, the vehicle was involved in a rollover crash. All four occupants of the car were ejected during the collision, with one of them losing their life at the scene.

The victim, identified as a 14-year-old boy, was pronounced dead upon arrival. Two other passengers, aged 15 and 16, were taken to the hospital for treatment and are currently stable. The driver, a 17-year-old, was also hospitalized but is in stable condition.

Authorities believe the 17-year-old was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the crash. Following his release from the hospital, he will be booked into juvenile hall and face several serious charges, including vehicular manslaughter, evading causing great bodily injury or death, and DUI causing great bodily injury or death.

The identity of the 14-year-old who died has not been released publicly. A scheduled autopsy is set for Monday to determine the exact cause of death. Police have stated that all four boys involved in the incident are from Marin County, though their specific relationship is still under investigation.

This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with reckless driving and the use of alcohol or drugs while operating a vehicle. The community is now coming together to support the families affected by this loss and to reflect on the importance of responsible behavior on the roads.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant and to obey traffic laws to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The case highlights the critical need for awareness and education regarding the consequences of impaired driving, especially among young people.
