New Scheduling Options at Texas A&M International University
Texas A&M International University is making significant changes to its fall class schedule, offering students more flexibility by starting classes earlier and ending later. This adjustment is designed to better serve individuals who may not be able to attend traditional class times due to work or family commitments.
The university’s new approach includes two distinct scheduling tracks: Bright Start and Night Start. These options allow for classes to begin as early as 7 a.m. and extend as late as 9:10 p.m., which represents a major shift from the previous schedule. This initiative aims to provide greater accessibility for students who have full-time jobs, are raising families, or have other responsibilities that make it difficult to attend classes during standard hours.
Supporting Working Adults and Student Parents
Juan G. García Jr., vice president for Enrollment Management at TAMIU, explained that the expanded hours were developed with the needs of working adults and student parents in mind. “Many of our students have family and work obligations that restrict their ability to take classes during those obligations,” he said. “By starting our day earlier, we carve out a space for them to maintain their degree progress.”
Bright Start classes will be offered at 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., while Night Start classes will be available at 7:35 p.m. and 9:10 p.m. These time slots give students more control over their schedules, allowing them to balance education with other life responsibilities.
Expanding Access Through High-Demand Courses
To implement the new schedule, university officials worked closely with each college to identify high-demand courses that would benefit from the extended hours. The selected courses cover multiple disciplines and will be taught by full-time faculty members. This ensures that students receive the same quality of education regardless of when they choose to attend classes.
García emphasized that the expansion is part of a broader effort to meet students where they are, both in terms of their needs and opportunities. “These options, separate or combined, can really advantage our students and help them to graduate on to a better life,” he said. “That better life can drive better futures, higher incomes and greater opportunities.”
Key Dates and Registration Information
Fall classes at Texas A&M International University will begin on Monday, August 25. Students who are interested in enrolling should note that late registration will be available through Friday, August 29, at 11:59 p.m. During this time, students can make course changes with the approval of their instructors.
To register, students can use the university’s Uconnect portal or visit the registration hub at go.tamiu.edu/registration for additional details. This streamlined process is intended to make it easier for students to access the new scheduling options and plan their academic journey accordingly.
By introducing these flexible scheduling options, Texas A&M International University is taking a proactive step toward supporting a diverse student population. The goal is to ensure that all students, regardless of their personal circumstances, have the opportunity to pursue higher education and achieve their goals.
